Man sentenced to 5 years for assaulting officer

A local man was sentenced to more than five years in state prison Thursday for an assault on a peace officer conviction.

Rolando Palmerin, 28, of Crescent City, was sentenced to serve five years and 8 months in prison Thursday following his acceptance of a plea deal for assaulting a peace officer and evading a police officer.

Last September, Palmerin led authorities on a high-speed chase in a stolen vehicle down Lake Earl Drive that reached speeds up to 100 mph before he was apprehended in Fort Dick, according to authorities.

Palmerin lost control of a stolen Honda sedan on a long curve north of Fort Dick leading toward U.S. Highway 101, flipping the vehicle in a` ditch, authorities said.

Palmerin fled into a field before being apprehended by deputies about 100 yards from the vehicle, authorities said.

Palmerin was originally charged on suspicion of committing eight crimes ranging from assault upon a peace officer to transportation of methamphetamine.

During the course of the pursuit, Palmerin ran drivers off the road and rammed an officer’s car at the end of it, court documents stated.

Palmerin was also ordered to pay $4,340 in restitution for the stolen vehicle.

In 2007, Palmerin was sentenced to two years in state prison and four years of probations for possession of a controlled substance and child endangerment.
