Math and science education to be updated by state

The California Department of Education seeks public input as it works to implement new state standards for math and science.

The Department of Education released a draft of Mathematics Framework for California Public Schools, Kindergarten through Grade Twelve for public comment last week.

The framework document charts progress from kindergarten to higher-level math and describes options for higher math at the middle-school level and provides greater support for English language learners and students with disabilities.

The public will have until June 20 to review the draft Mathematics Framework, found at http://www.cde.ca.gov/ci/ma/cf/mathpublicreview.asp. People may leave comments using the 2013 Mathematics Frameworks Online Survey at http://surveys.cde.ca.gov/surveylogin.asp?k=136578009364

The department is also working on the latest draft of the Next Generation Science Standards, which reflect major scientific advances in the past 15 years, according to a department press release. The standards describe what students should know and be able to do in each subject in each grade.
