Wanted men arrested following burglaryState park rangers arrested two men on suspicion of burglary and later found they were wanted by authorities in Colorado. Cody Dutton, 29, and Cody Magallones, 22, were arrested Dec. 31 on suspicion of possessing burglary tools and burglary after a burglary alarm was set off in a kiosk in the Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park campground, said Chief Ranger Marshall Neeck. A park maintenence man noticed two men lingering in the campground, Neeck said. Rangers caught up with the two men on U.S. Highway 199 near South Fork Road and stopped them for questioning, Neeck said. The rangers noticed burglary tools on the ground near the men and arrested them, Neeck said. Initially, the men gave false identification, but upon booking it was realized who they were and that they were wanted for probation violations in Colorado, authorities said.
Man sought after pot, hash lab found in home
Authorities are searching for a local man after finding marijuana and a hash lab in his home on Thursday afternoon. The Sheriff’s Office Felony Investigations Unit searched a house at 2625 LeClair Avenue finding 17 pounds of processed marijuana, 13 grams of hash and a lab with equipment to create hash, said sheriff’s Sgt. Steve Morris. The resident was not there nor could he be located at his work, Morris said. Gerald Prado, 22, is being sought on suspicion of possessing marijuana for sale, processing concentrated cannabis, possessing concentrated cannabis and possessing more than 28 grams of marijuana. Prado stands at five-feet five inches tall, has black hair and brown eyes and weighs 140 pounds, Morris said. Anyone information of Prado’s whereabouts is encouraged to call the sheriff’s office at 464-4191 or send an anonymous text by typing “dnsotip” followed by the information to 847411.
Grant brings tutors to help young readers
United Way of the Wine Country has awarded $250,000 to support local programs in Del Norte, Humboldt, Sonoma, Mendocino and Lake counties Locally, $3,000 will go toward a part-time Schools of Hope Literacy Initiative coordinator for the Del Norte County Unified School District. The program has provided volunteer tutors to help young students with their literacy in local schools. Pine Grove, Mary Peacock, Joe Hamilton, Bess Maxwell and Smith River Elementary Schools are participating. In addition, the volunteer time of these tutors is being calculated as an in-kind match to help the school district secure a federal Investing in Innovation (i3) grant.
Annual youth summit next month in Eureka
The 9th annual North Coast Youth Summit will be at College of the Redwoods in Eureka on Feb. 11. To register, go to ysummit. org. Fees start at $10 for participants who sign up by Jan. 16 and will increase as the summit approaches. It’s $20 for those who register Jan 16 to Jan 31 and $30 after the end of the month. “Target Tomorrow” is expected to attract 300 participants; it’s designed to empower youths and adults to become agents of change in their world. The keynote speakers will be Jessica McGuinty and Shawn Griggs.
