No highway closure at Klamath bridge tonight

A second full closure for the U.S. Highway 101 Klamath River Bridge tentatively scheduled for Monday night has been canceled. Sunday night’s full closure allowed all equipment and materials to be successfully moved.

The closure was part of a $7 million bridge hinge replacement project, now in its second season of construction on the bridge, also known as the G.H. Douglas Memorial Bridge. Caltrans is replacing the third of three hinges, extending the service life of the structure.

A hinge is a vital part of a bridge that allows it to expand and contract with constant changes in temperature.

One-way traffic control with a temporary signal remains in effect 24 hours per day, seven days per week, causing motorists anticipated 5-minute delays.

Separate full closures will be required in October to move equipment.
