Oregon governor expected at funeral

Kurt Madar

Several high-ranking officials are expected at the funeral of Crescent City's Bruno de Solenni on Saturday.

Oregon Gov. Ted Kulongoski, Adjutant Gen. Raymond Rees and Brig. Gen. Richard Chastain all plan to attend the burial Mass for the Oregon National Guard captain killed in Afghanistan.

"The governor plans on attending, but there is always the slight chance that emergency schedule changes might make it impossible," said Kulongoski's public relations officer, Rem Nivens.

Chastain worked with de Solenni during a previous deployment when the captain was stationed in Iraq.

De Solenni's body is expected to arrive in Crescent City this week despite the fact that the U.S. Air Force will not fly into Del Norte County Airport.

"We are going to make sure that he gets there for the services," Oregon National Guard Casualty Officer Kelby McCrae said. "We will go to wherever he is and do whatever it takes to bring him back."

De Solenni will be laid to rest in a coffin handmade from wood that he harvested and milled with longtime friend Todd Nickel.

The public is invited to the two services for de Solenni. On Friday, a Rosary will be held at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 319 E. St., at 7 p.m.

On Saturday, a Christian burial Mass will be held at 10 a.m., also at St. Joseph's, with interment to follow in the St. Joseph's section of the Crescent City Cemetery.

De Solenni's mother has requested that people attending the services wear red, white and blue.

"De Solenni will be buried with full military honors as he deserves," McCrae said. "The route to the cemetery will be blocked off by a combined effort of local law enforcement, the California Highway Patrol and the Del Norte County Sheriff's Office."
