Oregon man held in motel burglary

A man broke into a Klamath hotel and pilfered hygiene products and disposable cameras, but only made it to Crescent City before he was captured Monday evening, authorities said.

Around 9:30 p.m. Monday, Julie Houchins, manager of Motel Trees at Trees of Mystery, said she awoke to a noise in the motel and discovered someone burglarizing the place.

She opened her door, but stayed in her apartment and yelled at the man a few times to get out.

“I was right across the hall from him,” said Houchins. “He was about five feet away. I stayed in my apartment and there was a dog gate between us also.”

The man left, but mumbled “That’s what you get for leaving me alone,” as he walked by, Houchins said, adding, “he didn’t maybe seem right in the head.”

The man drove a truck past the windows of the lobby slowly, went into the Trees of Mystery parking lot and turned back toward the
office, training his headlights on the business, Houchins said.

She called a security guard and he was there within two minutes.

The truck sped off toward Crescent City, but the guard followed it and wrote down the license plate number, which was relayed to authorities, Houchins said.

She said the burglar left pillow cases full of credit card tape, towels and a box of pens that he had rifled through, but he got away with disposable cameras.

Sheriff’s deputies responded to the burglary and a Crescent City police officer was posted at the south end of town near the Best Western motel, said sheriff’s Commander Tim Athey.

The officer stopped a 1994 Ford Ranger being driven by Robert Blase, 29, a transient who listed his last town of residence as Yachats, Ore.

The officer found pillow cases, 10-20 disposable cameras, a hearing-impairment kit and hygiene products, Athey said.

The Ranger was reported as stolen out of Medford, Ore.

Blase was arrested on suspicion of burglary and possession of a stolen vehicle.
