Scenic area has a bad reputation and few visitors

A plaque sits alone, unreadable and overgrown by trailing blackberries as great blue herons stand in a reflection of the sky; all within walking distance of downtown Crescent City.

Nearby, a homeless man sits drinking beer, head bowed and oblivious to the geese, ducks and other waterfowl cruising the nearby wetlands.

Elk Creek Park is Crescent City’s own secret garden. Just behind Safeway lies a 160-acre wildlife refuge and park that, despite beautiful grassy paths, arching willows and numerous interpretive signs, rarely attracts visitors.
