Probation officer search begins

Last officer resigned 3 months ago after arrest

The search for Del Norte’s next chief probation officer has begun.

The recruitment will last at least 30 days and could extend longer, depending on the response. It comes three months after former Chief Probation Officer Thomas Crowell resigned following his embezzlement arrest.

Crowell has since moved out of the county and is completing his terms in a delayed entry of judgment plea deal that will keep him from having an embezzlement conviction on his record if he attends gambling addiction counseling, steers clear of gambling establishments for two years and pays a $661 fine.

He was accused of stealing $400, twice, from the bank account of the Law Enforcement Administrators of Del Norte County in  September 2013.

LEADN is composed of all the local law enforcement agencies, from parks to Pelican Bay State Prison. It helps provide training to officers and devises plans to improve service to the community. Crowell was vice-president of the association at the time.

“Once there was a resignation in the position, the assistant was asked to perform duties,” said County Administrative Officer Jay Sarina.

The recruitment began after Judge William Follett, who in his capacity as a magistrate hires the CPO, tweaked the job description to include certain government codes relating to certification, though the job duties remain the same, Sarina said.

County administrators will help to screen and interview the  candidates, Sarina said.

Follett could join the initial screening process or wait until finalists are chosen and then conduct interviews, Sarina said.
