Rollover traps driver in pickup on Highway 101

A rollover accident Wednesday morning left a passenger trapped inside an overturned pickup in the southbound lane of Highway 101 near Wilson Creek.

It took nearly an hour to extract Nicholas Bankston of Arcata from the wreck. He suffered serious cuts and bruises, according to Sgt. Rick Thoma, the supervising California Highway Patrol officer on the scene.

The driver, Ryan Arsenault, was headed north around 9 a.m. Wednesday when he lost control of the Department of Fish and Game vehicle, Thoma said.

The wreck shut down the road for 15 minutes and then squeezed traffic to a single lane for more than two hours.

Thoma attributed the single-car accident to “driving too fast on the wet road.”
