The upcoming election for District Attorney has turned into a two-man race.

Attorney Dale Trigg told the Triplicate on Monday he will be challenging attorney Robert Drossel in June’s primary election.

Trigg, who moved to Crescent City in December 2012, hopes to bring a new perspective and fresh air to the office.

Before become a public defender in Del Norte County, Trigg has held several different positions. He practiced criminal defense, personal injury and family law for eight years in Montana; for two of those years he also took on a judgeship part time, in which he presided over criminal and civil cases.

He practiced civil law in Newport Beach and before that he spent about a year and a half in the Republic of Palau, an island country in the western Pacific Ocean. During his time abroad, he worked for Palau’s government  as legal counsel for the Palau Public Lands Authority.

Before going abroad he worked in the Office of the Prosecuting Attorney for Greene County, Mo., where he specialized in felony drug cases, including marijuana, cocaine and heroin prosecutions.

He said Del Norte’s DA’s Office has suffered from a “leadership vacuum.”

“I feel like a new and fresh perspective would benefit the office and the community,” said Trigg.

He will be facing off against Drossel, who was Del Norte’s DA from 1999 to 2002.

Before passing the California State Bar, Drossel served as an officer for the Azusa and Pacifica police departments. He then spent 10 years as an investigator for the District Attorney’s Office in Kings County.

He was also a supervising deputy district attorney on the narcotics task force for Butte County. He served as an assistant district attorney in El Dorado County.

Drossel lost to now-suspended DA Jon Alexander in 2010 by 196 votes.
