With this summer’s wildfire season knocking on the front door, Six Rivers National Forest is holding a pre-season fire meeting on Friday from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Crescent Fire Protection District, 255 W. Washington Blvd. in Crescent City.
On Monday, in the same wildfire vein, Cal Fire and the Del Norte Fire Safe Council will hold a meeting with the goal of finding new leadership for the council. The meeting will take place at 6:30 p.m. June 9 at the Cal Fire station in Crescent City (1025 U.S. Highway 101, Crescent City).
The Six Rivers meeting will include a presentation about the outlook of the 2014 wildfire season and an interactive discussion about the protection of values from wildland fires and risk-based decision making.
“These meetings are our ongoing commitment to continue our collaborative efforts with an interactive discussion related to the risk and decision-making process for the management of wildfires on the Six Rivers National Forest,” said Acting Six Rivers National Forest Supervisor Mike Minton.
Since 2002, the Del Norte Fire Safe Council has created the Del Norte Fire Safe Plan, received millions of dollars in grants for fire breaks and water storage tanks, and loaned equipment to dozens of Del Norters to help them make their homes fire safe.
The council is looking for new leadership as the current director/coordinator team of Dan and Sharol Leavitt are hoping to step down due to health concerns.
