Thumbs up for coastal resort hotel

After three years of red tape, a destination resort hotel for Crescent Citys coast was approved by the California Coastal Commission yesterday.

Construction will likely start next spring.

Were just very excited that we can finally move forward and make it happen, said City Manager Dave Wells.

The hotel will be located on the bluff at A and Front Streets overlooking Battery Point Lighthouse.

Because of its coastal location, the building project falls under the jurisdiction of the Coastal Commission.

Plans for construction hit several glitches when Coastal Commission investigators questioned the hotels effect on bluff erosion and public access to the beach.

City staff and the hotels developer Xiao Jin Yuan were forced back to the drawing board several times to assuage the commissions concerns.

Obviously, it has been frustrating and we really appreciate Mr. Yuans tenacity, he has invested a lot in this, said Wells.

Wells and the City Council have long touted the future resort hotel as a linchpin for a tourist trade here.

It will have more than 50 rooms and two restaurants. To get there, travelers will be directed off of Highway 101 and down Front Street past Beachfront Park.

By the time the hotel is completed, city officials said the bike path and scenic drive projects should be finished as well.

We have jumped the last regulatory hurdle. Now its just work, said Wells.
