Tribal fall feasts on Monday and Tuesday

Yurok Social Services will host the Tribal Community Fall Feast and Wellness Gathering in two locations Monday and Tuesday.

The first will be at the Weitchpec office from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Monday, the second at the Klamath office from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.

At both events, there will be a turkey and deer meat dinner, cultural storytelling, demonstrations, rock ’n’ roll trivia and free family portraits. The Social Services Education Departments, Tribal Court and Tribal Council are sponsoring the event.

“The holiday season can often be a time of stress for the families in our community and we hope to alleviate some of that stress through our Community Fall Feast,” said Yurok Social Services Director Stephanie Weldon. “We want people to step away from the unnecessary pressure and enjoy great food with us.”

The feasts will incorporate groups of teens from Klamath River Early College of the Redwoods and Del Norte High to help with decorating, serving and cooking. Youths will be paired with adult mentors and will learn important life skills through their community service and participate in educational and cultural activities, organizers said.

As well as bringing the community together, the feasts will bring a variety of Yurok tribal departments, community and local businesses together to promote healthy family activities and raise awareness of domestic violence and substance abuse.

The tribe is accepting donations to help defray the costs of the feasts.

Another event, Dell Arte’s 28th Annual Holiday Show of the Nut Caper, will be Nov. 28 starting at 6 p.m. This event will include a post-show gathering with holiday refreshments. It is being sponsored by the Yurok Tribe’s Social Services Department’s Domestic Violence Program and is a free event open to all community members.
