A California Department of dump truck snagged a power line on U.S. Hwy. 101 late Thursday morning, taking out two utility poles, shutting down power to nearby homes and closing the road to traffic for about two hours.
No one was injured in the incident that occurred at about 11:15 a.m. near the intersection at Elk Valley Road, just north of Crescent City, said Sgt. Del Gray of the California Highway Patrol.
Police rerouted traffic until CalTrans and Pacific Power arranged vehicles to serve as lead escorts through the scene at about 1:30 p.m.
The accident knocked out power to 18 nearby homes, said Monte Mendenhall, spokesman for Pacific Power. Mendenhall expected power to return by about 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, after company crews worked to fix the broken poles and conductor.
