Veteran DN attorney running for judge

A third candidate is planning to add his name to the June primary ballot for Del Norte County Superior Court Judge.

Dohn Henion joins appointed Judge Chris Doehle and attorney Darren McElfresh in the race.

Henion has practiced law in Del Norte County for 32 years. He was an attorney for the city for 14 years until late 2003 and served as counsel for Del Norte County from 2006 to 2010.

He was a public defender from 1981 to 1989.

Henion said he would like to bring “a level playing field to each case.”

Henion will face off against Judge Chris Doehle, who was appointed by the Governor’s Office to finish Judge
Robert Weir’s term.

Doehle was an associate attorney at Harland Law Firm for five years before starting her own practice. She received her law degree from the University of Washington and her bachelor’s degree from the University of Oregon.

Doehle could not be reached for comment for this article.

Rounding out the race so far is McElfresh, who has been practicing law for 17 years in Del Norte County in criminal defense, prosecution and family and civil law.

In 2004, McElfresh spent about a year as a deputy district attorney before heading into criminal defense. He is currently a public defender and practices family law.

McElfresh said Henion is a welcome addition to the race in giving Del Norte more options to make the best decision for judge.

But he considers himself more active and updated on law than Henion.

“Do you want someone who’s current and practicing all the time? I think that’s an important decision to make,” said McElfresh.
