Several Search and Rescue teams gathered near Cant Hook Mountain this weekend to search for the remains of a man who went missing while mushroom hunting last January.

He was not found, but the search helped provide closure for the man’s family, said Del Norte Search and Rescue Coordinator Terry McNamara in an e-mail.

John Cunnison, 62, of Crescent City, and a friend were on French Hill Road about two miles off of South Fork Road when Cunnison left his friend to go down a hill and never came back, authorities said.

Cunnison’s friend waited for most of the day before reporting him missing, authorities said.

Fifty-two people took part in the search. Agencies represented included Del Norte Search and Rescue, Marin County SAR, Bay Area Mountain Rescue, Contra Costa County and the U.S. Forest Service.
