Richard Wiens will add the title of publisher when Michele Postal retires from that position Aug. 2, it was announced Wednesday.
Wiens has been editor of the Triplicate since January 2008, and he will retain that role.
“I’m looking forward to taking on new challenges, while also continuing to oversee the newsroom,” Wiens said. “The Triplicate is an important voice in the community — we are committed to making Del Norte a better place to live and work by serving as its primary source of news and advertising.”
Wiens added: “I’ve gotten to know this place pretty well in the last five and a half years, so I think I’m ready for the new responsibilities. But Michele has done a great job as publisher, and replacing her won’t be easy.”
Gordon Black, president of Western Communications, the Bend, Ore.-based company that owns the Triplicate, said he was happy to make an in-house promotion that keeps a familiar face in the Triplicate’s top spot.
Black also announced the promotion of Triplicate IT Manager Kyle Curtis to the newly created position of operations manager for the newspaper and its Smith River printing plant.
Wiens said the additional responsibilities for Curtis are pivotal to making the publisher/editor position work.
“Kyle already knows most of our operations inside and out,” Wiens said. “I’m looking forward to working more closely with him.”
Wiens has worked in journalism ever since graduating in 1979 from the University of Oregon, including seven years at the Hillsboro (Ore.) Argus; four years at the Los Angeles Daily News; 14 years at the Spokesman-Review (Spokane, Wash.); and four years at the Colorado Springs Gazette.
Curtis is a 2001 graduate of the University of Kentucky. He came to the Triplicate as a graphic designer in 2006 and became the IT manager in 2010.
