Work to identify fatal crash victims continues

Authorities are still working to identify two people who died after their truck went off the side of a river access road near California Highway 197 on Tuesday afternoon.

DNA tests are being conducted to verify the identity of one person in the truck and that could take a couple of weeks, said sheriff’s Commander Tim Athey.

Authorities have been able to deduce that at least one of the victims is male, and the other one may be as well, Athey said.

A 2001 Dodge pickup was traveling on the access road off the highway near mile-marker .65 around 4:15 p.m. when it went off the embankment toward the Smith River, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The truck flipped onto its roof and became engulfed in flames, the CHP said. The two occupants were dead at the scene.

It is unknown what caused the truck to go off the road, the CHP said.
