David Lewis Hubbard of Orleans, Mass., died peacefully in his home on February 1, 2014, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born in West Haven, Conn., on December 27, 1942, the son of the late Harry B. and Jessie (MacFarlane) Hubbard. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Robin (Gibbons) Hubbard; his daughter, Rachel C. Nicholas and her husband, Joel Nicholas of Montgomery, Mass., and their daughter, Evelyn; and his son, Major Nathan M. Hubbard and his wife, Michelle (Hutson) of Fort Benning, Ga., and their children, Luke, Lily, Claire, Faith and Clay. He is survived by his sister Audrey Mack, brother James Hubbard of West Haven, Conn., and brother Daniel and his wife, Pamela Hubbard of Rochester, N.H. He was predeceased by his sister Allena Conable and brother Harry Hubbard Jr. of West Haven, Conn.
Dave worked for the U.S. Forest Service for 38 years starting in Connecticut, then moving to the Gasquet Ranger District in California, where he spent more than 20 very happy years driving the forest roads, fighting fires and making friends. In 2005 he and Robin retired to Orleans, where he kept busy cutting trees and brush, tending his burn piles and growing an impressive garden, which he loved to share with family and friends.
A Celebration of David’s life will occur in June. In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer donations in memory of David L. Hubbard to support the Prostate Cancer Fund at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, P.O. Box 849168, Boston, MA 02284; or Lighthouse Repertory Theatre, P.O. Box 171, Crescent City, CA 95531.
