Obituaries: Bernice Elaine Brustol (Jan. 12, 1913 - Feb. 10, 2010) |
Bernice Elaine Brustol passed away on peacefully at her home at the age of 97, going home to be with Jesus February 10, 2010. Bernice was born on January 12, 1913, to Gus and Marie DePeaux (White) in Green Bay, Wis. She was a 39-year resident of Del Norte County. After graduation from high school she met and married Walter Ducat in 1931, both of Belgian parents. They raised their six children in Green Bay until the latter part of WW II when they moved to Vallejo, Calif., to work in the shipyard at Mare Island. Bernice worked as a metal cutter. After the war ended they moved to Klamath Falls, Ore., for 14 years. In 1960 they sold their home and moved to a dairy farm they purchased in Wisconsin Unfortunately Bernice lost her husband in 1962 in an auto accident. She sold the farm and moved back to Klamath Falls to be with her children. In 1971 Bernice met and married Martin Brustol for 24 years of happiness, enjoying the beaches and traveling to Hawaii, Wisconsin, Illinois and South Dakota. They attended Crescent City Foursquare Gospel Church. Martin passed away in 1994. Bernice’s greatest joy and love were her family and friends. Bernice beautified every home and yard she lived in with flowers. She loved growing flowers and trees. She belonged to the Fuchsia Club as a Charter Member and also Garden Club. At Martin’s funeral, Lloyd Powell, the minister, said, "I visited Bernice and Martin’s yard — a beautiful paradise of blossoms — Martin traded one paradise for another paradise," a true compliment to Bernice. Her talents were many — at the potters wheel she created many beautiful pieces for her family, at the spinning wheel she spun the wool she carded and wove into shawls, crocheting, tatting, handmade Christmas tree ornaments for all grandchildren, pine needle baskets, wood carving and crafts. Bernice is survived by her children: Joan Caster, Mary Vashaw, Kenneth Ducat, Diane Schulz, Blaine Ducat, step children Joan Brustol, Clyde Brustol and Nancy Simonson. Grandchildren Donna Horn, Chris Caster, Karen Barnett, Lori Stanton, Denise Crowder, David Ducat, Danny Ducat, Robin Ducat and Theresa Platzner. Great Grandchildren: Jerry & Joe Horn, Jason Caster, Jennifer Bowman, Alex Barnett, Holly Barnett, Jennifer Kennedy, Amanda & Robert Crowder II, Hannah & Josh Ducat, Jacob Ramirez, Kattie & Sarah Ramirez, Caitlyn Platzner, Justin & Michael Platzner. Great Great grandchildren: Waylon Horn, Brianna Horn, Chloe Kennedy, Karley Bowman, Adin Bowman and Robert Crowder III. Bernice was preceded in death by son Robert L. Ducat, grandson Paul Schultz, brother Clem DePeaux, husbands Walter Ducat and Martin Brustol. Bernice was a devoted wife, mother and friend. Her laughter, sense of humor and many stories enriched the lives of all who knew her. She is missed more than any of us can express. Visitation will be held at Wier’s Mortuary Chapel on Friday, February 19, from 10 to 5 pm. Funeral services will be held at Wier’s Chapel on Saturday, February 20, 2010, at 11 am with interment to follow at the IOOF Memorial Cemetery.
