Obituaries: Charlie Duane Crites(1933-2008)

Charlie Duane Crites, 74, passed away May 15 at his home in Grants Pass, Ore. Mr. Crites was born in Silverton, Ore., on July 24, 1933, to Dorothy Mable Morrison and Charlie Earl Crites. He graduated from Del Norte High School.

He served in the Army during the Korean war and in the early 1960s he joined others in the charter of a sailboat to sail the South Pacific, visiting numerous islands.

He worked in the timber industry for 50 years and was most recently employed by Timber Products. Mr. Crites has been retired for the past 10 years. Throughout his career he managed veneer plants and sawmills, cruised timber, logged and surveyed logging roads. He was responsible for the acquisition of raw materials for the veneer plants. He also testified on behalf of the industry before Congress.

He was active in community affairs, serving five years with the Oregon State Forest Protection Association, two years on the Josephine County School Board and the Committee for County Forestry.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, trap, skeet shooting and RVing with his grandsons and their friends. He was a life member of the Del Norte Rod and Gun Club and Pacific International Trap Shooting Association. He was also a member of the Grants Pass Country Club.

Survivors include his wife, Carol; daughter, Ronda Tocher, her husband Ken and grandsons, Trenton and Travis Tocher, all of Grants Pass.

Survivors also include a son, Danny D. Crites of Washington, and a daughter, Kim Redd of Crescent City, by a previous marriage and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Another son, Jake, preceded him in death.

A celebration of life will be held at Chapel of the Valley on Friday, May 23, at 11 a.m. Contributions of remembrance can be made to the Grants Pass High School Scholarship Fund, honoring Duane Crites. Scholarships will be provided to students pursuing a degree in the forestry and timber management industry.
