Obituaries: Daryl F. Dickey(1938-2007)

Dickey ().
Dickey ().

Born in Port Angeles, Wash., on Aug. 24, 1938, Daryl Dickey died midday on Jan. 11, 2008 from a sudden and fatal heart arrhythmia at home. His family is thankful to the neighbors and the emergency medical team who came to the home and then on to St. Joseph Hospital's ER for all their help—as well as to Dr. Matt Miller, Pastor David Groe, ER Dr. Margo Hall, and the ER staff.

Daryl is survived by his wife Judy (together 25 years), daughter Cathy Werling and grandchildren Matt and Carly of Round Rock, Texas; son Ross and Stephanie and grand-daughters Samantha and Olivia of Grants Pass, Ore.; step-daughters Melinda and Allen Swank of Fortuna and Pam and Gary Mather of McKinleyville; step-son Greg and Suzan Haynes and grandson Brendan of Redding; brothers Bob and Karyle Dickey of Crescent City, Mike and Jacque Dickey of Citrus Heights; sister Lavonne Kline of Hoodsport, Wash.; brother-in-law Dwight and Terrie Duba and sister-in-law Reiko Duba of Lancaster; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his loyal companions Hunter and Tillie.

Daryl was preceded in death by his parents, Ross and Olive Dickey and his son-in-law David Werling.

Daryl's family moved from Washington to Crescent City where he graduated from Del Norte High School in 1956; served two years in the U.S. Army and a lifetime in the timber industry in quality control and log scaling for Simpson Timber Company and Northern California Log Scaling and Grading Bureau. He also managed to work in a few years as a real estate agent in Humboldt County.

Daryl was a proud member in good standing in the Elks for 43 years, in Crescent City and Eureka BPOE #652.

He loved motor-homing and being a part of the Elks RV Club Redwood Roamers and recently enjoyed 3 weeks of travel to Southern California and Arizona. He loved golf all his life and enjoyed his golfing buddies. He loved telling stories, cooking, entertaining and every single day he read both local newspapers plus the San Francisco Chronicle, cover-to-cover and completed his day by doing each brainteaser and crossword puzzle.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, Jan. 17, 2008 at 1 p.m. at the Elks Lodge, 445 Herrick Ave. in Eureka. Contributions may be made in Daryl's memory to the Humboldt County Junior Golf Association, c/o the Eureka Municipal Golf Course, 4750 Fairway Drive, Eureka, CA 95503, or to your favorite charity.

Daryl was also enjoying retirement and an easy style of life—he was the "perfect retiree." He will be greatly, greatly missed and never, ever forgotten.

Care is under the direction of Pierce Mortuary, 707 H St., Eureka.
