Donald Grant Melvin, 69, of Crescent City, died Oct. 23, 2007 in a local care facility of natural causes.
He was born Feb. 9, 1938 in Arcata, to Harold Allen and Frances Victoria (Gibbens) Melvin. He was raised in Klamath, and worked on a tugboat there as a young man, and later drove truck in Klamath and Arcata before becoming a mechanic in Arcata.
He served honorably in the National Guard.
In the late 1960s he moved to the Medford, Ore., area where he drove a truck. He had resided in Central Point, Ore., and in later years, Eagle Point, Ore. Mr. Melvin had moved to Crescent City in June 2007 to be cared for by his son and family during his final illness.
Mr. Melvin enjoyed hunting, fishing and Westerns. He was an avid reader of Louis L'amour novels, and was a character himself, according to his family.
Survivors include his parents, Harold and Frances Melvin of Klamath; three children and their spouses, Grant and Trish Melvin of Crescent City; Dawn and Rod DeArman of Crescent City; and Vicki and Glenn Richardson of Klamath; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Tuffy and Shirley Melvin of Crescent City and Robbie and Donnis Melvin of Orick; a sister, Darlene "Sis" Melvin of Klamath; 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Corky Melvin.
No services are planned. Cremation is under the direction of Redwood Memorial Care.
