Edward "Ed" Thomas Underhill, 60, a long-time resident of Crescent City, died peacefully on Sunday, December 16, 2007, at home with his wife and grandsons at his side.

Ed was born January 25, 1947 in Deadwood, S.D., to Gladys and Donald Underhill. He married Peggy Jean McKay on March 18, 1967.

His working career started at an early age, helping to support his family. He worked at Northcrest Feed Store for Duane and Ellen Tiederman. He always admired and looked up to Duane and thought of him as a second father. He went to work at Miller Rellim in 1967 until the mill closure, and then worked for the school district for a short time. For the past 10 years he had worked for the City of Crescent City in the Maintenance Department.

Ed was a loving father and grandfather and dear friend to many. He held his family and friends in a most high regard. He was always there when you needed him and was ready to lend a kind, willing hand. One of his favorite sayings was, "Not a problem," and he was right there to help.

In his younger years, Ed was a volunteer fireman with the Fort Dick fire department and flipped many a pancake, feeding the local residents and helping to raise money for desperately needed emergency equipment.

Ed was passionate and enjoyed many things in life, including hunting, clam digging, cooking for family and friends and going to country western concerts with Peggy. A highlight this past year in his life was his trip to Branson, Mo., with his wife and friends, and more recently a hunting trip down to the forks of the Salmon River with his long-time friend Leroy Restad of Fort Dick. Ed was most passionate about his family though and always thought of them first, tirelessly working his whole life to provide for them a safe and loving home. He will be deeply missed.

Ed is survived by numerous relatives, including his dear wife Peggy of 40 years; his adult children Angie (Mike) Fowler of Medford, Ore., Andrea (Tom) Wadsworth of Crescent City, his son Dewey and foster daughter Fawn (Ray) Zumwalt of Elko, Nev.; his grandchildren Kaylin, McKayla, Baylee, Mitchell, Austin, Hannah, Kaden, Kristen and Layne; his father Donald T. Underhill, Vancouver, Wash.; sisters Louise (Fred) Reynolds of Sutherlin, Ore., Kathy Keeney of Vancouver, Wash., Sandy (Bill) Chilcutt of Fort Dick, Julie (Tom) Miller of Crescent City, Pat (Tony) Sharabarin of Prineville, Ore., Anita (Chet) Smith of Central Point, Ore.; and his brother Jim (Teddy) of Coos Bay, Ore.

He is preceded in death by his mother Gladys and his brother Richard (Rick) Dennis Underhill.

Visitation will be held from 2-5 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 18, and from 9-11 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 19.

Funeral Services will be held at 1 p.m. at Foursquare Church on Pacific Avenue in Crescent City, on Wednesday Dec. 19.

Interment will be held at the IOOF Memorial Cemetery in Crescent City. Fellowship will follow services at the Cultural Center on Front Street.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Fort Dick Volunteer Fire Department, 6534 Kings Valley Road, Fort Dick, CA 95538.

Arrangements are under the direction of Wier's Mortuary Chapel of Crescent City.
