Obituaries: Floyd Richards Sr. (Sept. 19, 1922 – April 15, 2011)

Floyd Richards Sr.,  88, was a lifelong resident of Smith River. He passed peacefully in his sleep Friday April 15, 2011, at Ocean Park in Brookings. He was the eldest surviving male member of the Tolowa Tribe.

He was born September 19, 1922, in Smith River to Edward & Ida Richards

He joined the U.S. Army in November of 1942. He was a member of Company K, 349th Infantry in the 88th Infantry Division, stationed in Italy during WWII, where he earned three Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart. He was honorably discharged after WWII ended.

He met Elinor Whipple in Crescent City on January 6, 1944, while on a short leave and they married on September 19, 1945.

They had four children, Jesse, Jeanine, Floyd and Frank.

After his discharge from the Army, his first job was helping build the old Gilbert Creek Bridge on Oceanview Dr., in Smith River. He worked 30 years as a Cat Skinner for Taylor-Westbrook, then several more years for various other logging crews. After retirement he enjoyed gardening, yard work and hunting geese, ducks and deer.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Elinor of Smith River, children Jesse (Marty) of Santa Ana, Calif., Floyd Jr. (Cheryl), Frank and Jeanine (Bill), all of Smith River, and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Goble, John, Clyde, Earnest, Walter, Ollie, Willie and Jesse.

Visitation will be held at Wier's Mortuary Chapel on Tuesday, April 19 from 9 a.m to 5 p.m. Services will be held Wednesday, April 20, 2011, at 11a.m. at Wier’s Mortuary Chapel in Crescent City, followed by graveside services at Howonquet Cemetery in Smith River. There will be a potluck following the graveside services at the Howonquet Community Center in Smith River.

Floyd requested that people dress casual for his services. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent in his name to any of the following: American Heart Association, 1400 N. Dutton Ave., Santa Rosa, Calif., 95401. American Cancer Society, 1301 Northcrest Dr., Crescent City, Calif., 95531. Alzheimer’s Association, 1060 La Avenida, Mountain View, Calif., 94043.

Arrangements are under the direction of Wier's Mortuary Chapel of Crescent City.
