George Ellsworth Townsend II died unexpectedly on Jan. 1, 2008, at the age of 84. He was with his family and friends before his passing.

George was born in Seattle on Jan. 29,1923. He grew up in Del Norte County, living for most of that time in Klamath. George graduated from Del Norte High in 1939. In his youth he played baseball for the Crescent Merchants.

George proudly served in the armed forces during World War II as a tail-gunner, and flew 51 missions over Europe. He was recently honored as the oldest living Veteran of Foreign Wars in Willow Creek. George enjoyed attending his once-a-year "Bomber Group" meetings throughout the United States.

George was active and hard-working. He was a logger, rancher, and worked in real estate. He and his wife, Dolores, who died a year ago, raised their five children in Klamath and McKinleyville, lastly residing in Willow Creek.

The Townsends operated their own logging business for 50 years, employing their sons. Over the years, George and Dolores bought several ranches in Humboldt County. They took pride in logging and fixing up the old homesteads, along with running cattle.

George was an avid golfer. He was a former member of Baywood Country Club and Beau Pre Golf Course, and recently Bigfoot Country Club. George was also a member of the American Cattle Association, Eureka Elks Lodge, Arcata Mason Lodge, Scottish Rite Five Mason of Oakland, and the Aahmes Shriners of Livermore for more than 52 years.

George is survived by his son, George Townsend, of McKinleyville; daughter, Sherry, and husband, Mike Moore, of Hydesville; son, Charles, and wife, Jerrine Townsend, of McKinleyville; son, Bill, and wife, Cindy Townsend, of Willow Creek; grandchildren, Tucker Townsend, Patricia Townsend, Amy Toroni and husband Brian, Brian Moore, Eric Townsend and wife Crystal, and Jessica Townsend; great grandchildren, Tyler, Cameron and Mason Toroni, and Kylee and Talen Townsend; brother, Jack Townsend, and wife, Sharon; brother-in-law, Robert Dellabalma, and wife, Carol, sister-in-law, Marie Masterson; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A celebration of George's life will be held at the Willow Creek V.F.W. Hall on Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m.
