Obituaries: Gladys Evelyn George (Oct. 8, 1928 - Aug. 15, 2011)

Gladys Evelyn George, affectionately known as “Tinker” by long time friends and family, peacefully went to be with the Lord on August 15, 2011 surrounded by family and friends in her home. She was a 63-year resident of Del Norte County having moved to Crescent City with her husband David and daughter Judy in 1948.

Gladys was born in Corona, California on October 8, 1928 to Alvin T. and Addie Mitchell Jellsey. She fondly remembered the long sunny days of her childhood on the Crown Ranch exploring the wonders of nature with her two brothers and two sisters. Gladys was an extraordinary woman; one of her proudest accomplishments was when she gave the salutatory address at her high school graduation from Corona Senior High in 1946.

Gladys met her husband David in church and they were married on December 8, 1946 in Corona at the Pilgrim Church. They were married for 48 years, through many joys and sorrows, until David's passing in 1994.

In Crescent City, Gladys worked for the Bank of America, Fred Endert's Rexall Drugstore as a bookkeeper, the Department of Employment, and eventually back to Bank of America where she retired in 1984. Upon retirement she volunteered in the Foster Grandparents program through the Del Norte Unified School District and also the Del Norte County Historical Society Museum.

Gladys was a devoted wife, mother, and friend; her faith in Jesus Christ was the cornerstone of her life. She was a member of The Church of the Nazarene. Gladys’ friends were such an important part of her life; she loved visiting with them at one of their favorite eateries or over the telephone. She adored her family and “near-perfect” grandchildren. She will be lovingly remembered for her quirky sense of humor, quick wit, and her impeccable sense of style. Gladys had the ability to set you at ease, make you feel important, and know that you were loved completely by her. She was a true servant of God and ministered to all who had the privilege of knowing her.

She is survived by her daughters Ellen Matthess (Robert), Marie Newton (Dale); son Stephen George (Becky); sister Thelma O'Dell; sisters-in-law Helen Jellsey and Vada Ellington. Her grandchildren include Angela Croucher (Andy), Amy Pickett, Pamela Hamilton, Ron Hamilton (Rhonda); Amanda Neuberg (Jeremy), Aaron Matthess (Chelsea); David George (Julie), Emily George, Daniel George; Amber Pement (Geoffrey), Ashley Petersen, Darrin Brittain, and Austin Brittain. She leaves behind fifteen great-grandchildren: Dennis, Dalton, Samantha, Megan, Kyle, Schyler, Grady, Ethan, Camden, Robbie, Amaya Love, Kaiya Hope, Makenzie, Bryce, Madilyne, and four great-great grandchildren, Colton, Jayden, Amaya Marie, and Juan. She had numerous beloved nieces and nephews. Among those she dearly loved and would have been proud to call her children include Jim and Starla Lund, their children Tinessa, and Bryce; Paula and Dale Sonday and Doug and Sue Ormson.

Gladys was preceded in death by her parents, husband David, daughters Judy and Peggy, brothers Alvin and Andrew Jellsey, and sister Ruth Downey.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, September 3, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at The Church of the Nazarene, 224 F Street, Crescent City, CA.

The family has requested contributions be made to one's favorite charity.

Arrangements are under the direction of Wier's Mortuary Chapel of Crescent City, CA.
