Obituaries: Harley Hurst (1907-2007)

Harley Hurst died April 15, 2007. in Brookings at the age of 99. He was born May 18, 1907 in Tilton, Ill.

For a short time during the depression, he worked in a coal mine in Milner County but was an entrepreneur at heart and loved to farm.

He lived with his family for seven years in Ferndale, where he was a farmer, then in Fortuna where he continued to farm and also work in construction.

In 1953 he moved to North Pole, Alaska, where he homesteaded 160 acres, selling his product to Alison Air Force and Wayne Right Air Force Bases. He retired with his wife Bettie in Homer, Alaska.

To be closer to his children, Harley moved to the Crescent City area where he lived in Brookings and Crescent City for the past eight years.

He was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church of Crescent City.

He is survived by his sons, Jack Hurst of Fortuna and Donald Hurst of Cave Junction, Ore.; his daughters, Barbara McKay of Gasquet and Doris McKay of Fort Dick.

He had more than 20 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren and 23 great- great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, six brothers, son Verden Hurst, son-in-law Billy McKay, and his wives Florette Andrews, Josephine and Bettie.

Friends and family are invited to attend his Memorial Services at 4 p.m., April 28 at the Crescent City Seventh-day Adventist Church, 1770 Northcrest Drive.
