Obituaries: Helen Maxine Garlin (Mar. 7, 1917 - Feb. 12, 2010)

Helen Maxine Garlin passed away February 12, 2010, in Crescent City. She was born on March 7, 1917, in Stanley, Wisconsin, to Ernest and Leatha Holderman, the second of nine children.

She moved to Los Angeles during WWII and worked for North American Aviation painting aircraft.

Helen and Fred Harris raised four children, Barbara, Buddy, Bill and Jim. One of the early “pioneers” of Pahrump, Nevada, Helen owned and operated “Helen’s Trading Post” during the ‘60s, a small grocery/cafe/local post office.

She retired to Brookings in the mid-1980s and resided in Crescent City for the last three years. Helen loved people, animals, she enjoyed reading, sewing, spending time with her friends and her cat “Fancy.”

She is survived by a big, loving family and we will miss her very, very much.
