Homer "Lee" Giles died on Jan. 14, 2008 in Crescent City after a long battle with lung cancer. He was born on May 21, 1933, in Miami, Okla., to Homer Lawrence and Lola L. (Jones) Giles, who predeceased him.
When he was 7 years old his family moved to Woodland, where he attended Beamer Grammar School and graduated from Woodland High School in 1952. After graduation he joined the Air Force and was stationed at March Air Force Base in Riverside, where he was an aerial photo interpreter. After an honorable discharge, he started college at Sacramento City College and graduated from San Jose State College in 1963. He worked for the State Board of Equalization for 33 years as a property appraiser, retiring in 1996.
Lee and his family lived in Carmichael during this time.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Alveta "Veta" (Leacheman) Giles, and two sons, Michael Lee Giles of Hermosa Beach and William David Giles of Crescent City. He is also survived by a sister, Donnis (Giles) Stoner, and her husband, David, of Sunnyvale; sister-in-law Ramona (Leachman) Slaven, and her husband, Robert, of Lake Almanor; and brother-in-law Guy Leachman of San Francisco.
Lee enjoyed fishing all his life. He joined a Nor-Cal Bass Club in Sacramento and fished in tournaments. His family members have many happy memories of the times they accompanied him camping and fishing.
Lee and his wife, Veta, moved to Brookings in 1999 and to Crescent City in 2002. Lee enjoyed playing poker at the local casino, and made many friends there.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, at Wier's Mortuary Chapel, 408 G St., Crescent City. A second memorial service will be held in his hometown at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, at McNary's Mortuary Chapel, 458 College St., Woodland.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made in Lee's name to the Del Norte County Library, 190 Price Mall, Crescent City, CA 95531.
