Obituaries: Jeffrey Lewis McBrayer (1957-2007)

Jeffrey Lewis McBrayer died April 15, 2007, of liver failure.

He was born Oct. 11, 1957, in Frankfurt, Germany, while his military family lived overseas.

He was the third son of George William and Hallie Lucille McBrayer, and moved to the United States when he was 10 months old. He spent his childhood and young adult years in Pacific Grove exploring the same tide pools that inspired Doc Ricketts in the novel "Cannery Row" by John Steinbeck. He was an avid outdoorsman and spent many days fishing in Monterey Bay, hiking the Santa Lucia mountains and camping along the Big Sur Coast.

He graduated from Pacific Grove High School in 1975. He married his high school friend, Stephanie, in 1976, and the couple had two children while living in Pacific Grove.

He earned his living as a lumberman, continuing in that trade as the family moved north to Arcata and Medford, Ore., where he advanced to lumberyard manager.

McBrayer moved his family to Pollock Pines where he was able to satisfy his longtime dream of returning to school to better himself and his family.

He began college at age 34, studying for two years at Cosumnes River Junior College in Placerville.

The family settled in Crescent City in 1993, where he worked for Square Deal Lumber Company. He enjoyed exploring the back roads with his family, and spending weekends camping, fishing and teaching his children about the natural world.

He graduated from College of the Redwoods-Del Norte in 1994, from Humboldt State University in 1998, and completed his teacher credentialing program at HSU in 1999.

McBrayer began his teaching career in 1999 as a math and science teacher at the McCarthey Alternative Education Center. During his career he served a term as vice president of the Del Norte Teachers Association.

He is survived by his mother, Hallie McBrayer of Pacific Grove, wife, Stephanie, and heartbroken children Tamerin of Susanville and Brenden of Portland, Ore., a son-in-law and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father George, and brothers James and Kenneth.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church, 664 H St.

The family suggests that those who wish to donate, make gifts in Jeff's memory to Point St. George Lighthouse Restoration Project.
