Obituaries: John Raymond Thomas(1924-2007)

John Raymond (Pappy) Thomas, aged 83, died at his residence on Oct. 7, 2007. He was born in St. Croix, Wis. on Aug. 1, 1924.

Mr. Thomas was a WWII veteran serving in the U.S. Army, and a member of VFW as well as the American Legion. Ray owned his own log trucking business in Northern California before moving to Fairbanks in 1975 where he continued in the transportation business on the Alaskan pipeline. He retired in 1995 from the Alaskan Teamsters where he trucked the entire construction and production length of the Alaskan Pipeline.

Ray enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing, the outdoors, cooking, and was an amateur log cabin builder. He was very loyal to family and friends, enjoyed people, hard work and play.

Ray is preceded in death by his wife, Bunny, daughter Patty Cathey, brother Jim and parents Ivan and Lillian Thomas.

He is survived by his children Johnnie R. (Cindy) Thomas and Joy (Bob) Coates, his brothers Hugh (Janet) and Griff (Shirley) Thomas and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Memorial Services will be held at the American Legion Post #57 on Sunday, Oct. 14 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Legion Post #57 in Fairbanks. Arrangements are being made by Fairbanks Funeral Home and Crematory.
