Louis W. Allen, 78, died Feb. 11, 2008, at the Crescent City Nursing facility. Louis, know by his family and friends as Louie, was born in Merced on Jan. 4, 1930.
After the Korean War, he was a resident of the Crescent City area, coming to live with his aunt and uncle, Fern and Bob Ames, Sr.
Louis served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War as a cook and baker on a rocket launcher vessel. After his discharge from the Navy, he worked as a cook and baker in the San Mateo-Redwood City area where, he had grown up.
Louis went to college in North Carolina to be become a counselor to alcohol dependents. He came back to California and did counseling in San Francisco. Eventually, he moved back to Crescent City and pursued the cooking profession. Also, he did alcohol counseling as a volunteer. Louis was also known as Lou and Papa Lou by his many friends in the Crescent City and Bookings areas.
After retiring, Louis was a volunteer classroom aide at St. Joseph Catholic School in Crescent City. He also assisted in teaching baking at the Bar-O-Boys Ranch.
In the social circles, Louis was known as a talented ballroom dancer. He was, also a member of square dance and round dance groups in Crescent City.
Louis is survived by his son Kelly Allen; grandson Danny; granddaughter Gina; brother James and his wife Nancy of Tucson, Ariz.; sister Yvonne Vella of Oakdale, and several nieces and nephews.
Louis was preceded in death by his son Matthew, parents Jim and Margaret Allen; brother Gene Allen, brother-in-law Mike Vella and niece Nanette Buchanan.
Visitation will be held Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and Monday from 9 a.m. until noon. Graveside services will begin at 1 p.m. Monday at the Del Norte County Veteran's Cemetery.
Arrangements are under the direction of Wier's Mortuary Chapel in Crescent City.
