Phillip H. McCanna, Jr. went to be with his Lord Jesus Christ on October 2, 2011, in Crescent City. He was born on April 7, 1927, to Phillip H. McCanna and Myrtle Karney McCanna in Malin, Ore. Phillip was a 58-year resident of Del Norte County.
He graduated from Del Norte High School in 1943 and later was drafted into the Army in 1944, serving in Germany for two years. Phillip married Norma (Floyd) McCanna in 1948 in Yreka, Calif. They had one son, Larry Phillip McCanna, who preceded his father in death. Larry had one son who was Phillip’s favorite person, Larry Phillip McCanna.
In his younger years, he taught Sunday School at the Assembly of God Church and also taught Boy Scouts, affiliated with the church.
Phillip was an elected board member and treasurer of the church. Phillip was a man of many talents, he worked in the timber industry as a timber faller, “cat skinner,” “low-bed” truck driver, heavy equipment transporter, mechanic and chip truck driver. He retired in 1989 from Simonson Timber Co. Phillip enjoyed working in his shop making lawn furniture, etc., and enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing and reading.
He is survived by his wife Norma McCanna and grandson Larry McCanna. His brother David (Mary) McCanna, sisters Corleen (Ed) Jenkins and Betty (Wes) Childreth.
Phillip dearly loved his nieces and nephews and was so pleased with their young children.
The oldest of nine children, Phillip was preceded in death by Ada (Susie) Aseltine, Nellie Hatcher, Jim McCanna, Myrtie Lucido and Donald McCanna.
His loved ones look forward to seeing him in Heaven and will greatly miss him until then.
Visitation will be held at Wier’s Mortuary Chapel on Thursday, October 6, from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. with funeral services following at 1 p.m.
Interment will take place at the IOOF Memorial Cemetery in Crescent City.
Arrangements are under the direction of Wier’s Mortuary Chapel.
