Reed E. Stout passed away in Crescent City on June 8, 2011. He was 90.

Reed was born May 25, 1921, in Derry, Penn., to William and Sarah (Shearer) Stout. He grew up there. Reed entered the 28th Division of the Pennsylvania National Guard as soon as he could and served until being called up to active duty with the U.S. Army at the outset of WWII. He served two enlistments for more than five years when he was discharged at the rank of Private on Nov. 6, 1946.

 

Reed married Myrtle Hull in Derry on March 12, 1946. Following his military service, Reed worked for the railroad and in steel mills in Pennsylvania before he and Myrtle moved to California in 1961. There Reed began what would be a 21-year career with FMC Corporation. He and Myrtle moved from La Habra , Calif., to Crescent City in 1983. She preceded him in death in 1997.

Reed loved to travel. He loved driving to different places, especially the desert, and would always have his camera with him. He also liked to garden and enjoyed spending time with his family.

Survivors include his sons, James Stout and his wife, Suzanne of Smith River, Rodger Stout and his wife, Flo of Madera, Calif., Jeff Stout and his wife, Nicole, grandchildren, Victor Stout (Janette), Cameron Pitts, Heidi Aponte (Ed), David Norberry (Kristina), Rebekah Stout and Mateo Stout, great-grandchildren, Drake, Lotus, Kailee, Claire, Lily, Grace and Ryen. Reed was preceded in death by his brother George and sisters Ida and Edna.

Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to Chetco Inn, 417 Fern St., Brookings, Ore. 97415.

A graveside service will be held on Monday, June 13, 2011, at 11 a.m. at the Del Norte County Veterans’ Cemetery, 400 Cooper Ave. in Crescent City. Interment will follow there.
