Obituaries: Robert E. Russell (Hook) (1943-2007)

Born April 19, 1943 to Robert and Lillian Russell in Crescent City, CA, he courageously fought a two year battle that came to an end at UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento on May 7, 2007 at the age of 64.

Robert was a long time resident of Crescent City. He attended Del Norte High School and graduated in 1961. He began commercial fishing as a teenager where he was given the well known nick name of "Hook". He was united in marriage to Sondra Schneider on Sept. 14, 1962. He continued to commercial fishing while raising a family. He purchased the fishing vessel Space Ship and in 1979 he moved his family to Cordova, AK. Hook fished out of Dutch Harbor in the Bearing Sea for about 5 years. In 1986 he returned to Crescent City, and in 1996 at the age of 53 he completed the correctional training to become a Correctional Officer. He retired from Pelican Bay State Prison in 2006.

Robert loved life to the fullest. He loved cooking, hunting, traveling and golfing, but above all he truly loved his family. Some of Bob's many accomplishments include work on the Pit River Dams in the Big Bend and Redding area. He also worked as a logger, miner, carpenter, butcher and a local business owner. Later in life he also made and sold original hand crafted wood items. He never slowed down!

He was preceded in death by his father Robert E. Russell, Sr.. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Sondra Russell, his children; son Richard Russell and his wife Melinda, daughter Barbara Maple and husband Carl, his mother Lillian Russell, his sister Jacqueline Rose and husband Dennis, grandchildren Robert Maple, Nicole Maple, Tiffany Maple, Roxanne Maple, Stand Hill-Russell, Kai Russell, Bella Sarah and numerous other close family members.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, May 12, 2007 at 3:00 in Fort Dick right off of Lake Earl/Purdy Lane, follow the signs to 6495 Lake Earl Drive.
