Ruby Spurgur was born August 2, 1939 in Monticello, Arkansas as Ruby Lee Harvey and passed away November 6, 2008 in Crescent City after suffering a fall in her home which developed into major complications and ultimately led to her passing while at Sutter Coast Hospital.
Ruby moved to Crescent City as a young girl with her family: her mother, Lucy Robertson, stepfather Pat Robertson and her younger sister Patsy Robertson. She worked at various clerical jobs in town and then in 1962, went to work for the Crescent Elk School District, which later became the Del Norte County Unified School District. Her first job with the school district was as a library clerk typist. In 1963, she was promoted to the position of the principal's secretary at Crescent Elk School, working there many years until she was promoted to Secretary III for the maintenance and operations department in July 1986. Ruby took early retirement after 38 years with the Del Norte School District in June 2000. While employed with the school district, Ruby had the reputation of getting things done. She was an outstanding employee and a fountain of information for those who knew her. She will be missed by all her many friends and colleagues.
She was preceded in death by her father, when she was a little girl. Her mother, her step father and her younger sister Patsy Parent. Husband Guy Spurgur, a former teacher and published author also proceeded her in death. Ruby was the last of the family and leaves no heirs, but lots of friends who will remember her as a loving and caring person who would go to any length to help her friends.
Graveside services will be held at the IOOF Memorial Cemetery on November 19th at 12 noon. In lieu of flowers, arrangements have been made at DENOCOS Credit Union, 1244 Glenn, Crescent City, CA 95531 for a fund to be set up at the Del Norte County Scholarship Foundation and to be known as the Ruby H. Spurgur Scholarship.
