Ruby Spurgur was born Aug. 2, 1939, in Monticello, Ark., as Ruby Lee Harvey, and passed away Nov. 6, 2008, in Crescent City after suffering a fall in her home.
Ruby moved to Crescent City as a young girl. She worked at various clerical jobs in town and in 1962 went to work for the Crescent Elk School District, which later became part of the Del Norte County Unified School District. Her first job was as a library clerk typist. In 1963, she was promoted to the position of the principal's secretary at Crescent Elk School, working there many years until she was promoted to Secretary III for the maintenance and operations department in July 1986. Ruby took early retirement after 38 years with the Del Norte School District in June 2000.
She was preceded in death by her father, when she was a little girl; her mother, Lucy Robertson; her stepfather, Pat Robertson; her younger sister, Patsy Parent; and her husband Guy Spurgur.
Graveside services will be held at the IOOF Memorial Cemetery on Wednesday at noon. In lieu of flowers, arrangements have been made at DENOCOS Credit Union, 1244 Glenn, Crescent City, CA 95531, for a fund to be set up at the Del Norte County Scholarship Foundation and to be known as the Ruby H. Spurgur Scholarship.
