Sandra Kay Velasquez, 59, died March 15 in Yuba City. She was born March 15, 1949, in Cedarville. She lived in Del Norte County for 16 years and spent the last 15 months in Yuba City.
She Attended Heald Business College, where she received her associate's degree in business. She was a retired peace officer. She was a CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) advocate, a foster parent, an advocate for Kid Town and child-abuse prevention. She was a member of the Del Norte Soroptomists and Beta-Sigma-Phi.
She is survived by her father, Erno Benner of Medford, Ore., and his wife, Dorothy; her mother Joyce Burrell of Crescent City; her brother Gary Benner of Silver Springs, Nev.; her sister Barbara Smith of Yuba City; her daughter Christy Wernick of Redding; her grand-daughter Heather Wernick of Crescent City; four nieces, one nephew, five great-nephews, four great nieces and numerous others.
A memorial service will be held April 5 at 1 p.m. at the United Methodist Church at 664 H St. in Crescent City. The cremation will be in Yuba City. Donations can be made to Child Abuse Prevention.
