Obituaries: Steven Wayne Howe (Apr. 23, 1951-Jan. 21, 2010) |
Steven Wayne Howe passed away at home in Palo Cedro, CA, January 21, 2010 at age 58. Steve was born April 23, 1951 in San Diego, CA to Charles “Chub” Howe and Virginia “Toots“ Howe. As a child “Stevie,“ the name used by family, was fun loving and a prankster. Leading neighborhood kids and cousins in acts of innocent mischievousness, he built lifetime memories of fun, excitement and adventure for all. Steve’s father, Chub, opened the Grotto in the late 50s. Steve always reminisced about the time spent helping Dad prep the most delicious clam chowder in the Northwest. He was always proud of his Del Norte County heritage and roots which descended from Howe/Hamilton pioneer families.
After finishing his undergraduate studies at College of the Redwoods, he enjoyed employment with the National Parks Service where he had a long career including service at Redwood, Olympic, and Whiskeytown National Parks. Steve began to learn to operate heavy equipment and soon joined Operating Engineers Local Union Number 3. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and deeply loved the outdoors. Some of his best times were spent goose and pheasant hunting in the ice cold weather in Tule Lake, deer and elk in the first snows each fall. He was always productive working in his garden, or in the backhoe, accompanied by his 4-legged constant companions “Turk”, and “TJ”. The days were highlighted by giving a fully-guided tour, and sharing the latest scrapbook memento. Steve was preceded in death by his father Charles Howe; mother Virginia Howe; aunts/uncles Margaret Gurney and husband Buck, Alva Louise Gruenig, Arlene Spann and husband Dee, Clyde Stowers Sr., and wife Doris, Norma Cardinet and husband Jean. He is survived by sisters Cathy Stomsvik and husband Don, Alva Marie Howe; nephew Christopher Black and daughter Emma; aunt Betty Radford and husband Jim; and ex-wife Colleen Bloxham. Steve took an active role in the lives of all his friends and their children. He will be missed by all of his hunting and fishing buddies, family, surrogate nieces and nephews, and all who crossed his path. In lieu of an official service, there will be a gathering of friends and story tellers at the Del Norte Golf Club, off North Bank Road, on February 20th at 12:30 p.m. until it ends. Come lift a glass, tell a story, shed a tear, in remembrance of an old friend. |
