Obituary: Agnes May (Smith) Chaney (Feb. 5, 1926 - Apr. 15, 2009)

Agnes May (Smith) Chaney, Feb. 5, 1926 – April 15, 2009, of Fort Dick, Calif. Passed away at the home of her daughter in Grants Pass. Born in Lee’s Summit, Mo., with her twin brother, Wm. H. Smith of Crescent City. As a teenager she moved to Texas and later to Eureka. Visiting family in Fort Dick she met and fell in I love with Bill Chaney. After a brief courtship, they were married on April 5, 1946. Agnes loved cooking, crafts, gardening and listening to Bill play the fiddle. She will be remembered as the little blond lady who worked at Redwood School in the 1960’s and 1970’s. She also baked and decorated many wedding cakes in Del Norte County. She was preceded in death by her husband, four brothers and two sisters. She is survived by son, Dale Chaney, daughter, Sandra Jacobson, granddaughters, Heather Jocobson and Heidi Jacobson Jolson, great- granddaughter, Haley Madlyn Jolson, her little dog, Cricket, numerous other nieces, nephews and grand-children. Family and friends are invited to attend a graveside sharing of memories at the Smith River Cemetery on June 7 at 1 P.M. The family requests donations be made to your favorite charity in lieu of flowers.
