Andy attended schools in Madera County and was working toward an AA degree prior to enlisting in the Air Force, serving his country from 1942 through 1946. Following his discharge from the service Andrew moved to Humboldt County and began working for the Hammond Timber Company. Shortly thereafter he joined the Dows Prairie Grange where eventually he met the love of his life Gertrude Evangeline Turner.
