Obituary: Archie “Bennie” Bennett (May 18, 1923 - Dec. 5, 2009)
Archie "Bennie" Bennett born May 18, 1923, to William and Jessie Bennett passed away on December 5, 2009, in Crescent City. Benny started working at a young age pickin’ cotton and pitchin’ watermelons. He was given his first guitar under the stipulation that he would play in church. Benny worked logging in Oregon until joining the Army during WW II. He served as entertain-ment director in Japan. After the Army, he was a heavy equipment operator for Simonson and Simpson Timber Company’s then he worked for the Del Norte County Road Department until his retirement.
He loved camping, hunting and fishing. Benny would play the guitar and sing around the campfire with his friends. He loved country music. Benny lived on Mud Hen Road and was known as the "Mayor of Mud Hen Village." Benny moved to Gasquet for 10 years before moving "to town." He was seen riding his electric scooter all around the neighborhood visiting and supervising neighbors’ projects. Benny loved his family and friends with all his heart and enjoyed telling them stories of his life. He is survived by his wife, Barbara of 55 years; daughter, Debbie and husband, Steve Berg; sons, Wayne and wife, Kela Barton and Dale Barton; sister, Juanita and husband, George Barlow. He had 9 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. Benny had a huge extended family including the Fort Dick pioneer McKay family. Memorial services will be on Tuesday, December 8 at 1:00 PM at Wier’s Mortuary Chapel. Arrangements are under the direction of Wier’s Mortuary Chapel of Crescent City.
