Obituary: Barbara Mitchell Uniker (May 31, 1910 - Dec. 16, 2009) |
Barbara Mitchell Uniker was born May 31, 1910 and died Dec. 16, 2009.
Two beloved nieces survive her, Judy Gilson and Laurie Gerber, who live in the San Diego area Barbara attended Smith College, and graduated from Barnard college in 1931. She completed her Master’s degree in Special Education from New York University. Her teaching career began at the Walden School in New York City. Later she taught blind children at the Lighthouse, N.Y.C and at the Arthur Sunshine Home for the Blind in Summit, N.J. From 1960 to 1970 Barbara worked for the National Council of Churches, as personal assistant to the Rev. Dr. Norman Vincent Peale. While living in Bronxville, she was President of the Bronxville League of Service and involved with many volunteer activities. In 1974 she retired and moved to Ojai, Calif., and was an active volunteer in the Ojai Valley Garden Club, the Ojai Music Festivals, Creekside Condominiums resident association, and the Little House Senior Center. She took up yoga in her mid-60’s, and was a featured model in the book The New Yoga for People Over 50. In 2003 Barbara moved to assisted living at Addie Meedom House, Crescent City. She was an active participant in the activities programs, and urged other residents to stay involved. She worked with the Crescent City Senior Center Low Vision group. Her family and conservators wish to give deep thanks to the Addie Meedom House staff for their care and love for Barbara. A brief memorial celebration will be held at Addie Meedom House on Monday, December 28, at 1:30 p.m Arrangements are under the direction of Wier’s Mortuary Chapel of Crescent City.
