He went to grade school in Smith River, the first two years of high school at the San Rafael Military Academy and graduated from Del Norte High School in 1959, where he excelled in football, baseball, basketball and track.
He attended Humboldt State College, where he again played in all sports but excelled in football and was later inducted into the Hall of Fame. He also played baseball for the Humboldt Crabs in Arcata during his college years.
He was a logger for 35 years and was proud to be a tribal member of the Smith River Rancheria. His happiest times were spent fishing on the Klamath and Smith Rivers and the years he spent logging and fishing in Alaska.
There are many stories to be told about his life here on Earth, but you who knew him probably already know a few, or many of them. We don’t think anyone will ever know them all and maybe some are better left unsaid. He definitely lived his life the way he wanted and never let anyone get in his way to change that.
He is survived by his daughters, Pennie Roberts and Laura Porter; his son Drew Roberts, grandchildren Josh, Johnny, Brayden and Braquel and his great-grandaughter, Zoey; also cousins and good friends, many who have passed on before him.
Memorial services will be held at Wier’s Mortuary on Friday, June 20, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers the family would like to request any donations be made to Del Norte High School Scholarship Foundation, c/o 125 Cable Lane, Crescent City, CA 95531.
