Brenda Del Ponte passed away unexpectedly at her home in Cave Junction, Ore., on Nov 8, 2011, due to the residual physical effects of a battle with double pneumonia she had originally won in late 2009.
She was born July 24, 1945, in Stockton, Calif. Soon thereafter her family moved to Crescent City where Brenda was raised and went to school. Her parents, Alfred and Ruby Del Ponte, owned and operated Del Ponte Shoes, which was severely damaged during the tsunami of 1964 and then relocated to 3rd Street. Brenda was the Salutatorian of the Del Norte High class of 1963.
Brenda was married to Dale Edwards from 1962 to 1979 and they had three children, Janey, Lisa and Neil. After the death of her father in 1975, Brenda and Dale bought Del Ponte Shoes, which they owned and operated until the late 1980s. She eventually settled in Cave Junction and lived there for over 20 years with her significant other, George E. Reed, who was with Brenda for 32 years. Brenda was a very intelligent and humble woman who cherished her children above all else. As a grandmother and great-grandmother she was fondly referred to as Nonnie.
One of Brenda’s proudest accomplishments was her position as the Head of Housekeeping at the Oregon Caves Chateau, where she was highly thought of by the staff and visitors. She cherished the Chateau and served there for nearly 10 seasons.
Brenda is survived by her significant other, George E. Reed, her daughters Janey Ecker and (Joe), Lisa Edwards and (Clay), and son Neil Edwards and (Simerpreet). Her grandchildren, Daniel Phillips, Breann Phillips, Clayton Garman, Bradley Garman, John Ecker, Jack Ecker and Jazzmine Ecker. Her great-grandchilden, Haylie Phillips and Cailin Phillips.
