Carl Graham Potter passed away February 14, 2013, in Redding, at the age of 71 years.
Mr. Potter was born on May 10, 1941 (Mother’s Day), in Detroit, Mich., the oldest son of F. Ross and Nettie Potter. He grew up in Detroit and in North Carolina. The family first moved to Crescent City in 1955. Carl graduated from Crescent Elk and Del Norte High, the first class to graduate from the new high school, in 1959. Carl also attended Humboldt State University for one year before being hired at the U.S. Post Office. He worked at the Post Office for 30 years before retiring in 1990.
He married Judy McGlothlen on Father’s Day in 1962; the couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last year, also on Father’s Day. In his retirement, Carl was a well-known presence around town and always was ready with a greeting and a hearty conversation for old friends and acquaintances. Carl especially enjoyed hunting in the fall with his sons.
He is survived by his wife Judy; daughter Nancy Potter Messner, son-in-law Michael Messner and grandson Stephen Messner of Mountain View; son Mark Potter and granddaughter Kailey Potter of Crescent City; son Gary Potter, daughter-in-law Megan Potter and granddaughter Sarah Potter of Crescent City; brother Brian, sister-in-law Sherrie, niece Brooke and nephew Casey, and numerous other relatives.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Wier’s Mortuary Chapel, 408 G Street, on Thursday, February 21, 2013, at 11 a.m. Reverend Bob Wheeler will preside.Interment will follow at the IOOF Memorial Cemetery. An immediate reception will be held at the Church of the Nazarene, 224 F Street.
