Darlene was born on April 29, 1936 in Crescent City. She was raised by her parents, Arlene and Dee Spann. Darlene attended Humboldt State University after high school and later received her bachelor’s degree in music from Dominican College in San Rafael, CA. After college she entered the convent with the Sisters of Mercy in Auburn, CA.
Darlene taught art and music at one of the Christian Brothers Schools in Napa, CA. She then spent time in San Francisco before moving back to Crescent City where she had her daughter Bridget. Darlene was the branch manager at Humboldt Federal Savings and later joined the family business, Hamilton Realtors. She worked in real estate for over 20 years. During this time she also continued to share her love of music by giving private piano lessons.
Throughout her life she held an avid interest in helping others and never hesitated to stand up for what she believed in. After taking a break from real estate and working in social services for some time, she became a foster mom to two children and was a constant contributor to enriching children’s education with after school activities. Darlene’s sassy and independent spirit will be missed by all who knew her.
Darlene is survived by her daughter Bridget Lacey of Crescent City; brother Bill Spann of Auburn, CA; niece Ashley Allen of Auburn, CA; niece Sondra Spann of Auburn, CA; sister Patty Atkinson of Reno, NV.; niece Terrie Lark of Reno, NV; niece Angela McGuire of Vancouver, WA.; and her beloved canine friend, Ragmop.
