Obituary: Dr. Bertrand Vipond (Oct. 31, 1923 – June 13, 2014)

Dr. Bertrand Addison Vipond was born in Porterville, Calif., on Oct. 31, 1923, to Addison Davis Vipond and Edna Rose Kirk Vipond. Dr. Vipond died peacefully, surrounded by family, at his home in Ukiah, Calif., on June 13, 2014, at the age of 90.

Bert’s family later moved to Loma Linda, Calif., where Bert attended Loma Linda Academy, and then La Sierra College in nearby La Sierra, Calif. He then received his medical training at the College of Medical Evangelists, later renamed Loma Linda University.

Bert and his young family moved to Crescent City, Calif., in 1950, where he served Del Norte County as a physician for 32 years.

Bert was drafted into the United States Army as a captain in 1954 and was sent with his family to Germany for two years. After serving in the military, he returned to his practice in Crescent City. After 32 years of practice in Crescent City, Bert moved to Ukiah to start a new and hopefully slower practice, but that practice soon became as busy as his practice in Crescent City had been. While in Crescent City, Bert delivered over 3,000 babies, and in the subsequent 20 years of practice in Ukiah, he probably delivered at least 1,000 more.

Bert is survived by his wife Bonnie Vipond, three of his children: Terry Vipond and his wife Dr. JoAnn, Karen Fisher and her husband, Dr. Deo, and Dr. Bertrand Henry “Randy” Vipond and his wife Josephine. He also has six step-children: Gregory Peterson and his wife Maureen, Christine Peterson Nave, Marcia Ann Sanderson and her husband Nathan, Sandra Peterson Miller, Wanda Alfven and her husband Patrick, and Mary Elizabeth Pool and her husband Jim I. Bert also had 26 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Dorothy Burg; two brothers, Dr. Floyd Vipond and Raymond Vipond; and a son, Samuel Lee Vipond.

Services for Dr. Vipond will be held on Saturday, July 26, at 4 p.m. at the Crescent City Seventh-day Adventist Church, 1770 Northcrest Drive.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Eversole Mortuary, 141 Low Gap Rd., Ukiah, CA 95482.
