Elizabeth Griffin Schindhelm, a long-time Crescent City resident, passed away on October 16, 2011, She was born in Watsonville, Calif., coming with her parents to Crescent City at the age of 11⁄2 years. She attended Crescent Grammar School and Del North High School. Elizabeth played baseball and basketball both in grammar and high school and was an honor student graduating from high school with a commercial certificate. While in high school, she worked for Ward and McVay, a long-distance hauling contractor, and the Chamber of Commerce. Upon graduation, she went to work for Hobbs, Wall & Company as a secretary to both Ira Thompson and Howard Libby. Elizabeth then went to the company’s general store located between Second and Third Streets on J Street running the bookkeeping machine.
In 1936, she married Walter Max Schindhelm and they had two children, a son Karl and daughter Jeanette. During this time Elizabeth was very active in the PTA, De Molay, Job’s Daughters, Eastern Star and Sunday School.
In 1955, she returned to the work force as office manager for the Del Norte County Fair working through 15 fairs.
After retiring, she and her husband Walter enjoyed traveling extensively in the United States, Mexico and Canada, then toured overseas and many foreign countries. For 17 years they wintered in Hemet, Calif. Elizabeth enjoyed bridge, other card games and square and round dancing.
She had one granddaughter, Melissa Ashford, who was a great joy spending much time in her earlier years visiting her grandparents in Crescent City. Elizabeth continued to be active in the Crescent City United Methodist Church, organizations, walking, traveling and bridge sections of the Women’s Club. She was a life member of Crescent City Elk School PTA, a California State retiree, member of the Crescent City Women’s Club, Del Norte County Senior Center, Del Norte Historical Society and the United Methodist Church.
Elizabeth was preceded in death by her husband Walter Schindhelm and daughter Jeanette Ashford.
Memorial services will be held at the United Methodist Church on Saturday, October 22, 2011, at 11 a.m.
